GATE score validity and the scorecard deadline

Applies to any GATE year. Source: GATE 2027 Information Brochure.

The brochure says the score is valid for three years from the announcement of results. It also says scorecards will not be issued from 1 January 2028. Those are two different clocks on the same score, and only one of them is three years long.

“Valid for three years” is the single most repeated sentence about GATE, and it is correct. What almost nobody repeats is the sentence sitting next to it in the same document, which says the scorecard itself — the file you would send to an institute or an employer — stops being issued about ten months into those three years. A candidate who assumes the two clocks run together can be holding a valid score and no way to evidence it. Both sentences are in the GATE 2027 Information Brochure, and both are quoted below.

Clock one: the score

Printed page 5 states it: “GATE 2027 score will be valid for THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of results. No information on GATE 2027 score will be available after this period.” The same line appears in the summary on printed page 2 — “GATE 2027 score will remain valid for THREE years from the date of announcement of results” — and again on printed page 28 about the scorecard. Results for GATE 2027 are announced on 19 March 2027 (Important Dates, printed page 3), so the three years run from that date and not from the examination date, and not from 1 January of anything.

Clock two: the scorecard

Printed page 28, section 8.2: “From January 1, 2028 onward, scorecards will not be issued for GATE 2027 qualified candidates.” Before that date there are two windows, not one. The scorecard is free to download during “the download period announced in the website”, and after that period “a fee of ₹500 (Rupees five hundred only) per test paper per candidate will be levied for obtaining the scorecard”. Important Dates on printed page 3 gives the paid window as running to 31 December 2027, with the start of both windows marked TBA. And the brochure adds, in its own words, the instruction that follows from all of this: “It is highly recommended that an electronic version of the scorecard be preserved by the candidates for future use.” There is “NO provision for the issue of hard copies”.

The one action this page is for

Download the scorecard PDF when it is released and keep your own copy, in more than one place. The brochure recommends it in those words, there is no hard copy, and after 31 December 2027 the document cannot be obtained at any price — while the score it evidences stays valid for well over another two years.

Validity is not acceptance, and the brochure says so

A three-year validity says how long the GATE committee will stand behind the score. It does not say that any institute or any employer will accept a score of that age. Those are different decisions taken by different organisations: an admitting institute publishes which GATE years it accepts for a given intake, and a recruiting organisation publishes the same in its own notification. Section 9 of the brochure, printed page 29, draws the line itself — qualifying “does NOT guarantee admission, scholarship, or a job”, and “GATE qualification does not assure a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) job, as it depends on the recruitment procedure of the concerned PSU”. Anyone who tells you a two-year-old score “is accepted everywhere”, or “is not accepted anywhere”, is describing a rule that belongs to an organisation they have not named.

What this means if you are considering a second attempt

The brochure sets no limit on the number of times a candidate may appear, and no age limit (printed page 2). A candidate holding a valid score from an earlier cycle and sitting again therefore ends up holding two scores, each with its own three-year clock and its own scorecard window. Nothing in the brochure merges them, replaces one with the other, or lets the committee reissue the older card once its window has closed — which is the practical reason to have saved it.

Every sentence in quotation marks above is from the GATE 2027 Information Brochure published by IIT Madras, as on 23 September 2026. Page numbers are the brochure's own printed page numbers, which are four lower than the PDF page numbers throughout that document. Where the brochure says TBA, this page says TBA, and its footnote that the dates are liable to change is reproduced. Nothing here is taken from a coaching site, a forum answer or a previous cycle.

Common questions

How long is a GATE score valid?+
Three years from the date of announcement of results. The GATE 2027 Information Brochure states on printed page 5: “GATE 2027 score will be valid for THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of results. No information on GATE 2027 score will be available after this period.” GATE 2027 results are announced on 19 March 2027, so the period runs from that date.
Until when can I download my GATE 2027 scorecard?+
Free download runs for a period announced on the website; after it, the scorecard costs ₹500 per test paper, and Important Dates gives that paid window as running to 31 December 2027. Printed page 28 states: “From January 1, 2028 onward, scorecards will not be issued for GATE 2027 qualified candidates.”
So is the score still valid after the scorecard stops being issued?+
Yes. They are two different clocks. The score remains valid for three years from the announcement of results, while the scorecard is not issued from 1 January 2028. This is why the brochure recommends preserving an electronic copy of the scorecard.
Can I get a printed copy of my GATE scorecard?+
No. The brochure states there is “NO provision for the issue of hard copies of the GATE 2027 scorecard” on printed page 28.
Will an institute or employer accept a score that is two years old?+
That is their rule, not the GATE committee's. Validity is how long the score stands; acceptance is decided by the admitting institute or the recruiting organisation under its own published criteria, and the brochure's section 9 says qualifying does not guarantee admission, scholarship or a job. Check the notification of the specific institute or organisation for the year you are applying in.
Does a new attempt cancel my older GATE score?+
Nothing in the GATE 2027 Information Brochure says so. There is no limit on attempts and no age limit, and each score carries its own three-year validity from its own results date.
