Which GATE you can sit, by the year you are studying in now

Applies to any GATE year. Source: GATE 2027 Information Brochure.

The eligibility rule is written about your year of study, not your age or your marks — so it decides which GATE cycle is your first one. Here is the rule quoted in full, and what it works out to for a first, second, third or final-year student in the 2026-27 session.

Almost every page written about GATE eligibility answers the question “does my degree qualify”. That is the right question if you have already finished the degree. If you are still studying, it is the wrong one — your degree almost certainly qualifies, and the thing you need to know is WHICH GATE you are allowed to sit, because the rule is written about your year of study and the exam happens once a year. A second-year student reading a page about GATE 2027 is reading about an exam they cannot sit.

The rule, in the brochure's words

Printed page 2 of the GATE 2027 Information Brochure states it twice, once for the general case and once for the medical and agricultural degrees:

Source: GATE 2027 Information Brochure, p. 2, as on 23 September 2026

  • “A candidate who is currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program OR has already completed any UGC/AICTE approved degree program in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Science/Commerce/Arts/Humanities is eligible to appear for GATE 2027 examination.”
  • “A candidate who is currently studying in the 5th/6th/7th semester or higher semester OR has already completed M.B.B.S./B.D.S./B.V.Sc./B.Sc. (Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry) degree is also eligible to appear for GATE 2027 examination.”
  • “There is NO age limit to appear for GATE 2027.”

Source: GATE 2027 Information Brochure, p. 2, as on 23 September 2026

Section 4, “Eligibility for GATE 2027” on printed page 9, says the same thing again in slightly different words — “currently studying in the third or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or who has already completed any government approved degree program” — and then hands the detail to Table 2, which sets out twelve degree routes row by row. Three things follow from the wording, and they are the whole of this article. The rule is about a YEAR, not an age: there is no age limit and no attempt limit in the brochure. The third-year floor is an UNDERGRADUATE floor: it does not apply to a postgraduate degree, and M.Sc., M.A., M.C.A. and post-B.Sc. integrated M.E./M.Tech. students are eligible from their first year. And because the floor is a year of study, the year you are in right now fixes which exam is your first.

What that works out to, if you are studying now

GATE 2027 is sat on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results announced on 19 March 2027 (Important Dates, printed page 3). Those dates fall inside the 2026-27 academic session, so the year you are in during this session is the year you would be in when you sit the paper. The table below simply applies the quoted rule to each year group. It is arithmetic on the rule, not a separate rule — see the note under it.

Source: Columns 2 and 3 are this page's arithmetic, not a quotation. The rule quoted is “currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program” (GATE 2027 Information Brochure, printed page 2, as on 23 September 2026); the examination dates are from Important Dates, printed page 3. Applying the two gives the columns above for a four-year degree running on a July-June session. A degree of a different length, a year repeated, a lateral entry or a session that does not run July-June changes the answer, and your own institute's record of your year of study is what the application declares. Rows 5 and 6 restate Table 2, printed page 10. Only the GATE 2027 brochure exists; see the note below on 2028 and 2029.

There is no GATE 2028 brochure yet

Everything above about GATE 2028 and GATE 2029 assumes the eligibility rule stays as it is. That is an assumption, not a fact: the only document that exists is the GATE 2027 Information Brochure, published by IIT Madras, and each year's brochure is published by that year's organising institute a few months before its cycle opens. The rule has been a third-year floor for many cycles, but no one can cite a 2028 brochure today because there is not one. We will re-read this page against the GATE 2028 brochure when it is published, and say on the page that we have.

Why a second-year student should care now

If your first cycle is GATE 2028, the practical consequence is not that you should start preparing this minute — that would be a sales line. It is that the document you should be reading is not this year's brochure. The syllabus is revised between cycles: GATE 2027 introduced a new Robotics and Automation paper, moved Textile Engineering and Fibre Science into the XE sectional paper as XE9, and re-coded the sections of XE, XH and XL. Anything you memorise from a 2027 paper-code table may be wrong for your cycle. What does NOT change between cycles is the structure of the paper, the marking scheme, how raw marks become a GATE score, and when normalisation applies — which is why those articles on this site no longer carry a year in the title.

One thing the year rule does not settle

Being eligible to sit a paper is not the same as being eligible for what you want afterwards. The brochure is explicit that qualifying “does NOT guarantee admission, scholarship, or a job”, and that a PSU job “depends on the recruitment procedure of the concerned PSU”. Admission to a particular programme, and recruitment by a particular organisation, are decided by that institute or that employer under its own rules, which are published by them and not by the GATE committee. Check the rule where it is written, on the website of the institute or the organisation you are aiming at, for the year you will apply in.

Common questions

Can I write GATE in my second year of B.Tech?+
Not under the GATE 2027 rule. The brochure requires a candidate to be “currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program”, or to have completed an approved degree (printed page 2). A second-year student in the 2026-27 session would still be in the second year in February 2027, so their first cycle is GATE 2028 — subject to the GATE 2028 brochure, which is not published yet.
Can I write GATE in my first year?+
Not on an undergraduate degree. The third-year floor is an undergraduate rule, though: M.Sc., M.A., M.C.A. and post-B.Sc. integrated M.E./M.Tech. candidates are eligible from the first year, per Table 2 on printed page 10 of the GATE 2027 Information Brochure.
Is there an age limit or a limit on how many times I can sit GATE?+
The GATE 2027 Information Brochure states “There is NO age limit to appear for GATE 2027” on printed page 2, and it sets out no cap on the number of attempts. A candidate may appear in one test paper or two in a single cycle, from the allowed combinations in Table 4.
I have already graduated. Which GATE can I sit?+
Any of them. A candidate “who has already completed any UGC/AICTE approved degree program in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Science/Commerce/Arts/Humanities is eligible”, with no age limit (printed page 2). The year of study rule only concerns candidates who are still studying.
Does IAE Academy teach the 2028 and 2029 cycles?+
Yes. The GATE courses on this site are sold by cycle, and Civil Engineering is offered for 2028 and 2029 only. If you are in your first or second year now, the cycle you would join for is 2029 or 2028 respectively, on the eligibility arithmetic above.
Which year of study do I declare on the application form?+
The one your institute records you as being in. The form declares your degree and your year of study, and the brochure requires the details to match the supporting document; nothing on this page overrides your own institute's record.
