Force on due to ; is the unit vector from toward and . A positive product means repulsion. Valid for point charges (or bodies small compared with ). In a homogeneous dielectric filling all space replace by : the force falls by the factor .
FIELD OF A POINT CHARGE
Field at distance from a point charge : away from a positive charge, toward a negative one. A charge placed in the field feels . Units: V/m, the same as N/C.
PERMEABILITY AND THE CONSTITUTIVE RELATION
Linear, isotropic medium. is the magnetization (magnetic dipole moment per unit volume, A/m) and the magnetic susceptibility. In a ferromagnetic material is not a constant: it depends on and on the magnetic history (see the B-H curve below).
MAGNETIC FLUX
is normal to the surface. For a uniform normal to a flat area , .
FARADAY'S LAW (FLUX RULE)
is the flux linkage of tightly wound turns. Holds for any closed circuit of thin wire, stationary or moving, including a bar sliding on rails. Where the current path through a moving conductor is not a definite wire (a rotating disc), compute the emf from the integral below instead. A positive emf drives current in the sense that is right-handed about the used to compute .
TRANSFORMER EMF (STATIONARY PATH)
Path fixed in space, changing with time.
PHASE CONSTANT (LOSSLESS)
In rad/m; is the wavelength in the medium.
PHASE VELOCITY AND WAVELENGTH (LOSSLESS)
is the free-space wavelength. Refractive index . The frequency does not change when a wave enters a new medium; the wavelength does.
TELEGRAPHER'S EQUATIONS (PHASOR FORM)
Sinusoidal steady state with ; the third equation follows by differentiating the first and substituting the second.
GENERAL SOLUTION
is the wave travelling toward the load and the reflected wave. The minus sign in matters: the reflected wave's current flows back toward the generator.
PROPAGATION CONSTANT OF A WAVEGUIDE MODE
is the mode's cut-off wavenumber, set by the guide's shape and size, and . is real (the mode propagates) only when .
CUT-OFF FREQUENCY, RECTANGULAR GUIDE (TE AND TM)
Same formula for TE and TM. Allowed indices: with but not both zero, and with . A filling with divides every air-filled cut-off by .
FAR-FIELD DISTANCE
= largest dimension of the antenna (a length here, not the directivity). At the path-length difference between the centre and the edge of the antenna is (phase error ). For an antenna large compared with the wavelength, the reactive near field extends to about and the radiating near field from there to . For an electrically small antenna () the binding condition is ; the radiation and induction terms of a Hertzian dipole are equal in magnitude at .
TIME-AVERAGE POWER DENSITY AND TOTAL RADIATED POWER
The middle form holds in the far field only, where and are in phase and . is a peak phasor. In a lossless medium is the same through every closed surface that encloses the antenna.
