Consider the function . The minimum value the function attains on the line (rounded off to one decimal place) is ____

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimum value of on the line is , reached at .

Official answer: 0.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. Use the constraint to remove a variable: . On the line, becomes a function of alone:

  2. Set the first derivative to zero: , which gives .

  3. Second-derivative test: , so is a minimum. Because is an upward-opening parabola, this is the global minimum over the whole line, not just a local one.

  4. Evaluate: .

  5. Check with Lagrange multipliers. Write the constraint as . Then gives and , so . With this gives again.

  6. Geometric check: is the squared distance from the origin. The distance from the origin to the line is and its square is . All three methods give a minimum value of .

KEY IDEA

A constrained extremum on a line becomes a one-variable problem once you substitute the constraint (), which gives a parabola whose vertex is the minimum. Lagrange multipliers give the same point. Geometrically, is the squared distance from the origin, so the answer is the square of the perpendicular distance from the origin to the line, .

WATCH OUT FOR

Giving the distance instead of its square: is the squared distance, so the answer is . Another slip is to find the critical point and then enter the coordinate without checking that it is the value of there. It happens to be the same number here, but only by coincidence.
