The solution , to the differential equation with initial conditions and is
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
The solution , to the differential equation with initial conditions and is
ANSWER
(C) . The initial velocity is zero and the equation only lets the velocity decay in proportion to itself, so the velocity stays zero and stays at .
Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)
Write the equation as . It is linear with constant coefficients, so its auxiliary equation is , i.e. , giving and .
General solution: , so .
Apply : . Since , .
Apply : , so . Hence for all . Check: and , so holds, and both initial conditions hold.
Quicker route: put . Then with , so . The velocity is zero at every instant, so stays at its starting value .
Check the other options. (B): , so . (D): , so . (A) satisfies both initial conditions, since and gives , but it fails the equation itself: , while , and these differ by .
So the answer is (C), .
KEY IDEA
The equation involves only and , so substitute to get the first-order equation . Its solution is . With the velocity is identically zero, so is the constant . Equivalently, the roots give , and forces .
WATCH OUT FOR
Checking only the initial conditions. Option (A) satisfies both and and is picked for that reason alone, but it does not satisfy . Every option also has to be substituted into the differential equation. A second slip is to read as (a harmonic oscillator), which gives oscillating answers.
