GATE 2018 EC Q.23: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The probability that is the smallest of the four is .
Official answer: 0.25Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)
The four variables are independent and identically distributed, each . Their joint density is , which stays the same if the variables are reordered. So every ordering of is equally likely.
Each is continuous, so for . With probability 1 exactly one of the four is the smallest.
The events , , are therefore mutually exclusive and exhaustive (up to a probability-zero set of ties):
By symmetry (the variables are i.i.d.), each index is equally likely to be the minimum: .
Hence .
Check by integration. Condition on . By independence, is the smallest when each of exceeds , which has probability : Put , so . As runs from to , runs from to : No property specific to the normal distribution was used. The result holds for any four i.i.d. continuous random variables.
KEY IDEA
With i.i.d. continuous random variables, ties have probability zero and every ordering is equally likely. So any given variable is the minimum (or the maximum) with probability , whatever the distribution. Here , which gives . Zero mean and unit variance play no part in the answer.
WATCH OUT FOR
Trying to work with the normal CDF or normal tables, or thinking the zero mean matters (for example, answering or ). Another mistake is to multiply over the three other variables to get . The events , , all depend on , so they are not independent and you cannot simply multiply their probabilities.
