Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A circle with centre O (marked with a small cross, labelled O just above it). A rectangle PQRS is inscribed in the circle with all four vertices on the circle: P at the top-left, Q at the top-right, R at the bottom-right, S at the bottom-left; sides PQ and SR are horizontal and PS and QR are vertical. The rectangle is drawn slightly wider than it is tall. A straight line segment runs from vertex S to the centre O and is labelled a (the radius). The four regions inside the circle but outside the rectangle (the circular segments above PQ, below SR, left of PS and right of QR) are shaded blue; the interior of the rectangle is white (unshaded).

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The shaded area is , option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. Shaded area = area of circle area of rectangle .

  2. A rectangle inscribed in a circle has its diagonal as a diameter: the right angle at is an angle in a semicircle, so the chord it subtends is a diameter. Hence , and the segment drawn in the figure is half of this diagonal.

  3. Let the sides be and . Pythagoras in triangle gives .

  4. Since , we have , so , with equality only when .

  5. So the rectangle of maximum area is a square of side , and its area is .

  6. Shaded area , which is option (C).

KEY IDEA

A rectangle inscribed in a circle always has a diameter () as its diagonal. For a fixed diagonal, is fixed, and the product is largest when . So the maximum-area inscribed rectangle is a square of area , and the shaded area is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the measurements from the figure. The rectangle is drawn wider than it is tall, but "maximum possible area" forces a square, so the drawing is not to scale. Another common slip is to treat as the half-side or as the whole diagonal instead of the radius. That gives a square area of or and leads to options (A) or (B).
