Where GATE BT's marks have come from
Based on IAE's count of past papers. What it cannot tell you is at the end.
Of the study library's three GATE BT subjects, Fundamentals of Biological Engineering has carried the most marks on average across the seven papers of 2019, 2020 and 2022–2026: 20.4 a paper, against 16.7 for Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology and 12.1 for Recombinant DNA Technology and Tools. This post lines those marks up year by year and names the three syllabus sections the library has not covered yet. It is a count of past papers, not a forecast for 2027.

This shows what was asked, not what will be asked: how many marks GATE BT's seven papers of 2019, 2020 and 2022–2026 gave to each subject the study library has published for BT, for a GATE BT candidate working out the subject component of a study plan. The GATE 2027 Information Brochure fixes the paper at 65 questions and 100 marks, with General Aptitude a constant 15 marks outside the subject syllabus. The remaining 85 marks, Engineering Mathematics plus the subject questions, are the subject component this post counts (GATE 2027 Information Brochure, printed page 4).

Source: the official GATE BT papers and answer keys for 2019 (from IIT Madras's own copy), 2020 and 2022–2026. 2018 and 2021 are not included. Each question's marks are from the official answer key. We placed each question under a subject ourselves; the exam paper does not label subjects. The 85 subject marks per paper are the brochure's subject component. Data as of 5 Oct 2026.
Each of the three published subjects appeared in all seven papers. Fundamentals of Biological Engineering — Section 4 of the syllabus, which includes bioreaction engineering, upstream and downstream processing, and measurement and control — carried the most marks of the three in five of the seven papers: 2019, 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology carried the most in the other two, 2020 and 2023. Fundamentals of Biological Engineering also had the widest range, from 8 marks in 2020 to 29 in 2022; Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology had the narrowest, 14 to 23. Recombinant DNA Technology and Tools ranged from 4 marks (2026) to 18 (2020).
The 'Not in a library subject yet' row is the largest row in every one of the seven papers: 30 to 40 marks a paper, 35.7 on average. These are marks on questions that are not under any of the library's published subjects. They include the three sections of the BT syllabus the library has not covered yet (Engineering Mathematics, General Biology, and Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology) and can include a question from a covered section that we did not place under its subject. This post does not say what those marks were made of. (The library's Engineering Mathematics subject is built from the EC, EE and IN papers, so for BT, Engineering Mathematics is one of the sections not covered yet.)
GATE BT subjects in order of average marks per paper
| Order | Subject | Average marks per paper | Lowest–highest in one paper | Papers it appeared in (of 7) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fundamentals of Biological Engineering | 20.4 | 8–29 | 7 |
| 2 | Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology | 16.7 | 14–23 | 7 |
| 3 | Recombinant DNA Technology and Tools | 12.1 | 4–18 | 7 |
Source: Computed from the table above. General Aptitude is not in this list: it is a fixed 15 marks outside the 85-mark subject component. Subjects with the same average (to one decimal place) share a place, marked =. Data as of 5 Oct 2026.
By average marks per paper, the order runs Fundamentals of Biological Engineering at 20.4, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology at 16.7 and Recombinant DNA Technology and Tools at 12.1, with no ties. A plan that follows these marks would take Fundamentals of Biological Engineering first, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology second and Recombinant DNA Technology and Tools third. Three things limit that order. It is an order of averages, and the three subjects' paper-by-paper ranges overlap: 8–29, 14–23 and 4–18 marks. It ranks only the three subjects the library has published. The marks in the 'Not in a library subject yet' row, larger than any one of the three in every paper, sit outside it, and in the GATE 2027 brochure's pattern Engineering Mathematics alone carries 13 marks, more than Recombinant DNA Technology and Tools' 12.1-mark average, while the library has not covered it for BT. And a single paper can turn it round: in 2020, Fundamentals of Biological Engineering carried 8 marks against 23 for Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology.

Three of the six sections of the official GATE 2027 BT syllabus are not covered by a published study subject yet: Engineering Mathematics (Section 1), General Biology (Section 2), and Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology (Section 5). Their questions are in the papers but not in the library. Their marks are part of the first table's 'Not in a library subject yet' row, 30 to 40 marks a paper. That row can also include a question from a covered section that we did not place, so it is not made up of these three sections alone, and this post does not split it between them. Sections 3, 4 and 6 each correspond to one published subject. The papers themselves are at GATE BT previous-year papers; the GATE BT paper pages list every question of each paper in printed order with its official key; and the GATE BT syllabus-to-question map sets each line of the 2027 syllabus against the GATE 2026 questions we placed under it.
WHAT THIS CANNOT TELL YOU
This counts the seven GATE BT papers of 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. 2018 and 2021 are not included. 2019 is from IIT Madras's own copy. We placed each question under a subject ourselves; the exam paper does not label subjects. The 'Not in a library subject yet' marks are the three sections not yet in the library plus any question from a covered section that we did not place. Nothing more specific is claimed about them. All of it is a count of seven past papers, not a forecast for the GATE 2027 paper.

GATE BT previous-year papers 2018–2026
Nine years of GATE Biotechnology question papers (2018–2026). The 2018, 2019, 2024 and 2026 papers are the organising institutes’ own files, each with its official answer key; the 2020, 2021 and 2022 papers carry the official key at the end.
ANY GATE YEARGATE BT syllabus-to-question map
Which lines of the official GATE 2027 Biotechnology syllabus had a question in GATE 2026 BT: 41 of 167 did, and 126 did not. We placed each question under a line ourselves; the exam paper does not label topics.
ANY GATE YEARGATE BT 2027 syllabus: what changed
GATE BT 2027 has six sections where 2026 had seven: Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology is gone as a section, and most of its list is printed inside Section 4 instead. Heat transfer and thermodynamics do not appear by name at all.
