How the GATE 2027 exam city choice works
The GATE 2027 cycle
You choose three GATE 2027 examination cities and all three must be in the same zone — the first choice fixes the zone, and the Committee may allot a city that is not among your three.

A GATE 2027 candidate chooses three examination cities, and all three must be chosen from the same GATE 2027 zone. Section 6.3 of the official Information Brochure is explicit: if a candidate chooses a particular city, in a particular zone, as the first choice, then the second and third choices are also restricted to that same zone as the first. There is no fourth choice, and no way to spread the three across two zones. The list you choose from is Table 1 of the brochure, described there as a tentative list of the examination cities, zone-wise. And a choice is a request rather than an allotment: because of operational constraints, the GATE Committee reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one, and to allot a city that may not be from any of the choices selected by the candidate. That last sentence is the most important one on the page.

What section 6.3 says
- Table 1 gives a tentative list of the examination cities, zone-wise, in which the GATE 2027 examination is scheduled to be held.
- A candidate can choose three cities from the list given in Table 1, with the three choices chosen from the same GATE 2027 zone.
- If a candidate chooses a particular city, in a particular zone, as the first choice, then the second and third choices of the city will also be restricted to the same zone as the first.
- Because of operational constraints, the GATE Committee reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one, and to allot a city that may not be from any of the choices selected by the candidate.
- GATE 2027 is conducted by IIT Madras as the organising institute, for 30 test papers, as a Computer Based Test, and the brochure says the examination will be held at several centres spread across 300+ cities in India.

A city choice is a preference, not a guarantee of allotment
Entering a city as your first choice does not entitle you to sit the examination there. The brochure reserves to the GATE Committee the right to allot a city that is not among the three you selected, and gives operational constraints as the reason. Nothing in the brochure describes an appeal against the city you are allotted. What the three choices do reliably determine is your zone, because the first choice is what assigns it. Treat the allotment as a fact you will learn in January 2027, not one you can plan around in September 2026.

The zone is the real unit, not the city
For administrative purposes, the brochure states, the examination cities in India are segregated into eight zones, and the operations related to GATE are managed by the GATE offices of the coordinating institutes in their respective zones. Table 1 is where those two things meet — it pairs each zonal institute, with its address, email and phone numbers, against the tentative list of examination cities in that zone. This is why the first choice carries more weight than a preference ranking suggests. Candidates are assigned a zone at the time of application, based on the first choice of the exam city, and any query regarding the application, the examination centre, the admit card and the results is handled by that zone's coordinating GATE office, in consultation with the organising institute. Your first choice therefore names both the city you most want and the office you will be writing to.

What you decide, and what is decided for you
| The decision | Who makes it | What the brochure states |
|---|---|---|
| How many cities you choose | You, in the application form | “A candidate can choose three cities from the list given in Table 1” — §6.3, printed page 11. The choice of GATE examination cities is listed among the data required while filling the online application form, printed page 15. |
| Which zone those three cities sit in | You, but only once — by your first choice | “If a candidate chooses a particular city (in a particular zone) as the first choice, then the second and third choices of the city will also be restricted to the same zone as the first” — §6.3, printed page 11. |
| Which city you are finally allotted | The GATE Committee | “Because of operational constraints, the GATE Committee reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one and allot a city that may not be from any of the choices selected by the candidate” — §6.3, printed page 11. |
| Which GATE office handles your queries | Follows from your first choice | “Candidates are assigned a zone at the time of application, based on the first choice of the exam city” — Contact Information, the unnumbered heading following §6.10, printed page 21. |
| When you learn your city | Announced to you | “Notification of the candidates’ exam cities will be made during January 2027” — §6, printed page 9; §6.10 on printed page 21 repeats that candidates will be notified about the city of their exam centre in January 2027. |
| The centre, date and time printed on the admit card | Fixed once issued | “Requests for change in the Centre or Location or Date/Time specified in the Admit Card will not be entertained” — §6, printed page 9. |

Page numbers are the brochure's own printed page numbers, which run four behind the PDF page numbers. Table 1 itself — the zone-wise list of examination cities — is not reproduced in this post: the brochure labels that list tentative, and the same section reserves to the Committee the right to change it.
Where to see the cities in your zone
Open the official GATE 2027 Information Brochure and go to Table 1, which begins on printed page 6 and continues onto printed page 7, titled “Zonal Institutes for GATE 2027 and tentative list of examination cities”. Each zonal institute is printed alongside the cities that belong to its zone, together with that office's postal address, email address and phone numbers. Read your zone's block before you enter anything in the form: the first city you type closes off the rest of the list. This post deliberately does not reprint that table. The brochure calls it tentative and section 6.3 reserves the Committee's right to add a new city or take one off it, so a copy pasted into a web page can go quietly out of date while still looking authoritative. The brochure is the list; a coaching website is not.

The four points in the calendar where your examination city is settled
- While filling the application. The choice of GATE examination cities is one of the items of data the brochure lists as required while filling the online application form, alongside your personal details, the choice of test paper and the uploads.
- Up to the change deadline. The brochure's Important Dates table carries a last date for change of category, paper and examination city choices, and notes that an additional fee may be applicable per change; the table is marked liable to change. The dates themselves live on our GATE 2027 application checklist at /resources/gate-2027-application-checklist.
- January 2027. The brochure states in two places that the notification of candidates' examination cities will be made during January 2027; the Important Dates table carries the specific day, and the checklist above prints it with its source.
- The admit card. Candidates must appear at the centre on the date and reporting time specified on the admit card, and requests for a change in the centre, the location or the date and time specified on it will not be entertained. Admit card download dates are announced on the official GATE 2027 website; admit cards are not sent by post or email.

Plan travel around the notification, not around your first choice
The examination runs across six dates in February 2027, in forenoon and afternoon sessions, and the brochure says the exact details of the complete examination schedule will be notified later on the GATE 2027 website; it also marks those dates liable to change. Your city becomes known during January 2027, and the centre, date and time on the admit card are not open to a change request afterwards. Anything you commit to before the January notification — a booking, a leave application, a shared room — is built on a city that has not been allotted yet.

What to do with this before you submit the form
Three things, in order. Open Table 1 in the official brochure and read your zone's list end to end, so that all three of your choices are cities you would travel to. Put the city you most want first, because that one entry fixes the zone for the other two and fixes which GATE office answers your questions. Then check the application dates — the opening and closing dates, the fee, and the last date on which examination city choices can still be changed — against our GATE 2027 application checklist at /resources/gate-2027-application-checklist, which carries each date with its source. The official syllabus PDFs for every paper are at /resources/gate-2027-syllabus. Nothing in this post is a substitute for the brochure: it is a guide to the pages of it that decide where you will sit the examination.
