GATE 2023 IN question 56: A single enhancement nMOS stage with supply V_DD = 5 V at the top rail.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single enhancement nMOS stage with supply V_DD = 5 V at the top rail. R_D = 1 kΩ connects V_DD to the drain. The gate is biased by a divider: R_1 = 200 kΩ from V_DD to the gate node and R_2 = 300 kΩ from the gate node to ground. A source V_in (sinusoidal symbol, lower terminal grounded) drives the gate node through a coupling capacitor C∞. The body (substrate) is tied to the source, shown by the arrow connected to the source terminal; the device is labelled W/L = 2. R_S = 1 kΩ connects the source to ground. The output V_out is taken from the source node through a second coupling capacitor C∞, with no load drawn. All grounds (V_in return, R_2, R_S) are common.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 0.64 to 0.70Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Gate bias (voltage divider, no gate current): .

  2. Drain current from the stated drain bias (Ohm's law across ): .

  3. Source voltage and : , so and the overdrive is .

  4. Consistency check (square law): , which matches the current found from . Saturation holds because .

  5. Transconductance: (equivalently ).

  6. Small-signal model: both are short circuits and is AC ground. drives the gate directly (the divider only loads the ideal source), and the output is taken at the source with no load, so this is a common-drain (source follower) stage with series-series feedback through . Assumptions: (no channel-length modulation is given), and no body effect because the body is tied to the source. sits in the drain and does not affect the source-node gain.

  7. Source-follower gain: with and ,

KEY IDEA

The drain bias of 4 V fixes straight away. That gives , and . Because the output is taken at the source, the stage is a source follower with gain . only sets the bias and plays no part in the signal gain.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the output as if it came from the drain and using the degenerated common-source gain , which has the right magnitude but the wrong sign and the wrong physical meaning. Other slips: dropping the factor in the square law so that comes out wrong, or adding a body-effect term even though the body is tied to the source.
