The following reaction represents biomass synthesis from hexadecane
where represents the biomass. The value of respiratory quotient (rounded off to two decimal places) is ________.
ANSWER
RQ = 5.37 / 12.5 = 0.4296, which rounds to 0.43.

Definition of respiratory quotient: Both are taken per mole of substrate, so RQ is a ratio in and has no units. Here the substrate is hexadecane, .
Read the two coefficients from the stoichiometric equation. Per mole of : consumed and evolved .
Check the carbon balance to confirm the coefficients are consistent: .
Compute:
Why it is so low: hexadecane is a highly reduced substrate. It has no oxygen and . A large share of the goes into oxidising hydrogen to water (), and about two-thirds of the carbon () ends up in biomass instead of . Both effects push RQ well below 1, which is typical of growth on alkanes.
KEY IDEA
Respiratory quotient is moles of CO2 evolved divided by moles of O2 consumed. Both numbers can be read straight off the growth stoichiometry, so no elemental balancing is needed. Very reduced substrates such as alkanes give RQ well below 1.
WATCH OUT FOR
Inverting the ratio (O2/CO2 = 12.5/5.37 = 2.33). Another is dividing by the moles of biomass or NH3 instead of O2. A third is assuming RQ is about 1, as it is for glucose. For a highly reduced substrate like hexadecane most of the oxygen goes to water and biomass, so RQ is far below 1.
