The phase margin of the transfer function is ________ degrees. (rounded off to the nearest integer).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The phase margin is . The gain crossover is at , where . In fact exactly.

Official answer: -2 to 2Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Write the frequency response: . The zero is at , in the right half-plane, so the system is non-minimum phase.

  2. Magnitude. The RHP zero has the same magnitude as an LHP zero: . So

  3. Gain crossover frequency, from : , so and .

  4. Phase. The RHP zero contributes , a lag like a pole's. The double pole adds . The gain is positive, so it adds no phase. Therefore .

  5. At gain crossover: . Direct check: and , so .

  6. Phase margin: The Nyquist plot passes through at , so the gain and phase crossover frequencies coincide and the closed loop is marginally stable.

KEY IDEA

A right-half-plane zero has the same magnitude as the left-half-plane zero , but its phase is the opposite: it contributes , a lag. Get the gain crossover from the magnitude, then add up the phase with the correct sign for each factor.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating the zero as if it were and giving it a phase lead of . That makes and a wrong PM of . Another slip is to read the leading minus in as an extra . Written as the gain is and adds no phase.
