GATE 2025 EE question 37: All four options are gate-level circuit figures.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2025 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

All four options are gate-level circuit figures. (A) Input u passes through a NOT gate (inverter) and input w passes through a NOT gate; both inverter outputs feed a 2-input OR gate whose output is f. (B) Inputs u and w connect directly (no inverters) to a 2-input OR gate whose output is f. (C) Input v passes through a NOT gate and input x passes through a NOT gate; both inverter outputs feed a 2-input OR gate whose output is f. (D) Inputs v and x connect directly (no inverters) to a 2-input OR gate whose output is f.

  1. (A)

Figure — u and w each through a NOT gate, the two inverted signals into a 2-input OR gate, output f (i.e. )

  2. (B)

    Figure — u and w directly into a 2-input OR gate, output f (i.e. )

  3. (C)

Figure — v and x each through a NOT gate, the two inverted signals into a 2-input OR gate, output f (i.e. )

  4. (D)

    Figure — v and x directly into a 2-input OR gate, output f (i.e. )

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, which is and each inverted and fed into a 2-input OR gate: option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Notation: is the complement of . The dot between factors means AND. The function is a product of four sum terms (POS form):

  2. Take the first two factors together. They differ only in . By the distributive law, . With :

  3. The last two factors also differ only in , so the same rule with gives

  4. Now . These two factors differ only in . Apply the rule again with :

  5. Check with maxterms. A sum term is only when every literal in it is . So the four factors are at , , and respectively, and everywhere else. Between them these are exactly the four inputs with and , taking every combination of and . So , which means (De Morgan). The result does not depend on or .

  6. To build , pass and each through an inverter and feed both inverted signals into a 2-input OR gate. That is circuit (A). (This is the same as a 2-input NAND of and .) Circuit (B) gives , (C) gives and (D) gives , so none of them matches.

KEY IDEA

Adjacency, : when two sum terms differ only in one variable, that variable drops out. Use it twice here, first on and then on , to get . As a check, the four maxterms are exactly the inputs where .

WATCH OUT FOR

Two mistakes are common. One is to drop the complements and pick (B) (), forgetting that every factor has and , never or . The other is to keep the wrong pair of variables and pick (C) or (D). Only and appear both complemented and uncomplemented across the factors, so those are the variables that cancel. The variables that are complemented in every factor, and , are the ones that stay.
