GATE 2025 EE Q.35: solution and answer

GATE 2025 · EEQ.35 · 1 mark · NAT

The induced emf in a 3.3 kV, 4 pole, 3-phase star connected synchronous motor is considered to be equal and in phase with the terminal voltage under no load condition. On application of a mechanical load, the induced emf phasor is deflected by an angle of 2° mechanical with respect to the terminal voltage phasor. If the synchronous reactance is 2 Ω, and stator resistance is negligible, then the motor armature current magnitude, in ampere, during loaded condition is closest to, ________ (round off to two decimal places).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The motor armature current magnitude during the loaded condition is approximately 66.49 A.

Official answer: 66.25 to 66.75Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Phase voltage: .

  2. At no load, the induced emf equals the terminal voltage in both magnitude and phase: .

  3. Pole conversion: for a 4-pole machine, electrical angle mechanical angle . So the torque angle is electrical.

  4. Take and , and since stator resistance is negligible, .

  5. For two equal-magnitude phasors separated by angle :

  6. Magnitude of current:

KEY IDEA

For a synchronous machine with P poles, a mechanical angle of rotor shift corresponds to an electrical (torque) angle of δ_elec = (P/2)·δ_mech. With |V| = |E| (no-load emf equals terminal voltage) and negligible armature resistance, the current is found from the phasor difference V − E = jXsIa, whose magnitude for two equal phasors separated by δ is 2V sin(δ/2).

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating the given 2° as the electrical torque angle directly, instead of converting it from mechanical to electrical degrees using δ_electrical = (P/2) × δ_mechanical for a 4-pole machine — this halves the actual current found.
