Consider a non-negative function which is continuous and bounded over the interval [2, 8]. Let and denote, respectively, the maximum and the minimum values of over the interval.

Among the combinations of and given below, choose the one(s) for which the inequality

is guaranteed to hold.

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Only option (A), , is guaranteed. From we get . Because , this gives . Options (B), (C) and (D) all fail for .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Bounds on the integrand: is continuous on the closed interval , so its maximum and minimum exist, and for every in the interval.

  2. Integrate over , whose length is . Integration preserves inequalities, so

  3. Both bounds are attained: for a constant function we have , and the integral is exactly . So a combination works for every admissible only if and .

  4. Non-negativity matters: gives and , so and . (If could be negative, would be larger than and the argument below would fail.)

  5. (A) . The inequality holds for every admissible , so it is guaranteed.

  6. (B) : take , so . The integral is , but . Fails.

  7. (C) : take , so . The integral is , but . Fails.

  8. (D) With , both and . Fails. Only (A) is guaranteed.

KEY IDEA

Bound the integral using the interval length: , which here is . A constant function reaches both bounds, so a lower bound needs and an upper bound needs . The step from down to and from up to is valid only because .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the upper limit (or the lower limit ) as the multiplier instead of the interval length . Another mistake is dropping the non-negativity condition: if could be negative, then when , and even (A) fails. For example, gives an integral of , which is less than . A third mistake is marking (C) because is a valid upper bound, while missing that breaks the lower bound. Both halves must hold.
