Answer and solution

ANSWER

Only (B) is always true: when everywhere, is strictly increasing, so it can vanish at most once and has at most one local minimum. The answer is (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Since for every real , the function is strictly increasing on , because a function with a positive derivative is strictly increasing. Also, is differentiable, so any local extremum must satisfy (Fermat's theorem).

  2. (A) Counter-example: has , but for every . It has no stationary point and therefore no local minimum. So (A) is not always true.

  3. (B) Suppose were two distinct local minima. Then . But is strictly increasing, so , which is a contradiction. So has at most one zero, and has at most one local minimum. (B) is always true.

  4. (C) Suppose were a local maximum. Then . Because is strictly increasing, for and for . So falls and then rises around , which makes a strict local minimum, not a maximum. So no such can have a local maximum; and are examples. (C) is false.

  5. (D) Counter-example: has , and its minimum value is . Convexity controls the shape of the graph, not how high or low it sits, because adding any constant leaves unchanged. So (D) is not always true.

  6. Only (B) holds for every function with on . Answer: (B)

KEY IDEA

everywhere means is strictly increasing, so it has at most one zero. At any zero, changes sign from negative to positive. So has at most one stationary point, and that point can only be a minimum. does not guarantee that a stationary point exists ( has none), and it says nothing about the vertical position of the graph ( dips below zero).

WATCH OUT FOR

Picturing only a U-shaped parabola and marking (A), or (A) and (D). A convex function can be strictly monotonic with no minimum at all (, ). A constant shift keeps but can push the minimum value below zero ().
