The value of the integral in counter clockwise direction around a circle of radius 1 with center at the point is
ANSWER
The integral equals , option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)
The contour is the circle , traversed counter-clockwise (the positive direction).
Factor the denominator: . The numerator vanishes at neither nor , so the integrand has simple poles at and and is analytic everywhere else.
Locate the poles: is the centre of , so it lies inside. For , , so it lies outside and contributes nothing.
Residue at the simple pole :
Residue theorem, (poles inside ):
Check with Cauchy's integral formula: write the integrand as with , which is analytic on and inside . Then , the same result.
This matches option (A).
KEY IDEA
Only poles inside the contour count. encloses but not , so the integral is times the residue at , which is evaluated at , that is .
WATCH OUT FOR
Three slips are common here. The first is counting the pole at as well: it lies at distance 4 from the centre, outside the unit circle. The second is losing a sign in , which gives (option C). The third is forgetting the residue altogether and answering (option B).
