ANSWER
Gold : copper in alloy C is , option (B).
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)
Turn each ratio into fractions of the alloy's mass. In A the parts are , so gold is and copper is of A. In B the parts are , so gold is and copper is of B.
Take the same mass of each alloy. Choosing the LCM of the part totals and , that is of each, keeps every quantity a whole number. (Any common mass gives the same final ratio.)
Alloy A (): gold , copper .
Alloy B (): gold , copper .
Melting the two together adds the component masses: gold in C and copper in C .
So gold : copper in C . Check: , which is the total mass of the two alloys (). The answer is option (B).
KEY IDEA
A ratio has to be turned into fractions of the alloy's mass before alloys are mixed. With equal masses, the gold fraction of C is the plain average of the two gold fractions: , so copper is and the ratio is .
WATCH OUT FOR
Adding the ratio terms straight across, , which is option (A). That only works if you mix 5 units of A with 10 units of B, not equal masses. The two ratios have different part totals (5 and 10), so each has to be scaled to the same alloy mass before the gold and copper amounts are added.
