- (D)
If for all real values of , which one of the following statements is true?
ANSWER
(A)
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)
Multiply both sides by , which is never zero: The right side is a constant, so the left side must also be constant for every .
Put . Since , this gives .
Substitute back: , that is,
Take any , for example . Then , so , and hence . Option (A) holds.
Check the other options. (B): would need for all , which fails at . (C): would need , which is impossible because the left side is positive and the right side is negative. (D): needs with , but forces , so is not even defined.
So the only true statement is (A): .
KEY IDEA
for every means for every . A non-zero multiple of is never constant, so the identity can only hold if , and then too. Put in two values of ( gives , and any then gives ).
WATCH OUT FOR
Using only , getting , and then choosing (B) . The words "for all real values of " are what force . Another trap is choosing (D) because : once as well, is undefined, not zero.
