GATE 2022 IN GA Q.7: solution and answer

GATE 2022 · INGA Q.7 · 2 marks · MCQ

A game consists of spinning an arrow around a stationary disk as shown below. When the arrow comes to rest, there are eight equally likely outcomes. It could come to rest in any one of the sectors numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 as shown.

Two such disks are used in a game where their arrows are independently spun.

What is the probability that the sum of the numbers on the resulting sectors upon spinning the two disks is equal to 8 after the arrows come to rest?

Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two identical circular disks drawn side by side. Each circle is divided into 8 equal sectors (45 degrees each) by four straight lines through the centre: one vertical, one horizontal and two diagonals at 45 degrees. The sectors are numbered clockwise starting just right of the top of the vertical line: 1 (top, between the vertical line and the upper-right diagonal), 2 (between the upper-right diagonal and the horizontal line, right side), 3 (between the horizontal line and the lower-right diagonal), 4 (between the lower-right diagonal and the bottom of the vertical line), 5 (between the bottom of the vertical line and the lower-left diagonal), 6 (between the lower-left diagonal and the horizontal line, left side), 7 (between the horizontal line and the upper-left diagonal), 8 (between the upper-left diagonal and the top of the vertical line). In each disk a single arrow starts at the centre and points up and slightly to the right, into sector 1. No shading.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The probability that the two numbers add up to 8 is , which is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Sample space: each disk has 8 equally likely outcomes. The two spins are independent, so there are equally likely ordered pairs , where is the number on the first disk and is the number on the second.

  2. Favourable outcomes: we need with . For each from 1 to 7 there is exactly one partner , and it lies between 1 and 7, so it is on the disk. The value would need , which is not on the disk.

  3. So the favourable pairs are , which makes 7 ordered pairs. and count separately because the two disks are distinct. counts once.

  4. Classical probability, favourable over total:

  5. This matches option (D).

KEY IDEA

Two independent spins of an 8-sector disk give equally likely ordered outcomes. Count the ordered pairs with and divide by 64. For a target sum with , there are such pairs, so here there are 7.

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting unordered pairs, so that gives 4 outcomes, then dividing by 64 or by 36. The 64 outcomes are ordered pairs, so the favourable outcomes must be ordered too. A second slip is to include or , but 0 is not a sector on the disk.
