Answer and solution

ANSWER

The answer is (C): at most half the candidates can have a score larger than the median.

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. "Must be TRUE" means the statement has to hold for every possible set of scores, so one counterexample is enough to rule an option out.

  2. Option (A), test with a right-skewed set: scores give median and mean . The median is smaller than the mean, so (A) is not always true.

  3. Option (B), test with a left-skewed set: scores give median and mean . The mean is smaller than the median, so (B) is not always true.

  4. Option (D), same left-skewed set: mean , and of the candidates (scores and ) are above it. , so more than half the candidates score above the mean and (D) is not always true. The mean has no fixed position in the ordered list.

  5. Option (C), definition of the median: arrange the scores in increasing order . The median is the middle value ( odd) or the average of the two middle values ( even).

  6. For odd, every score up to and including the middle one is the median, so only the scores after it can be larger. For even, the lower half are all median, so only the scores in the upper half can be larger. Either way the count is , and scores tied at the median only lower it.

  7. So (C) holds for every distribution of scores. Only (C) must be true.

KEY IDEA

The median is defined by position: at least half of the ordered scores sit at or below it, so no more than half can be strictly above it. The mean depends on the size of the scores, not their position. Depending on skew it can lie above or below the median, and more than half the scores can exceed it.

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing (A) or (B) from a remembered rule such as "mean > median for skewed data". That rule depends on the direction of skew, so neither direction holds for every set of scores. A second mistake is treating the mean as a "middle" value and picking (D). A single left-skewed set like puts two of three scores above the mean.
