Let be a set of linearly independent vectors in . Let the -th element of matrix be given by , . Which one of the following statements is correct?
is invertible
is a singular value of
Determinant of is
for some non-zero
ANSWER
The correct option is (A): is invertible.
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 DA (IIT Roorkee)
Let have the given vectors as its columns. The entry of is , which is . So (the Gram matrix of the vectors).
The vectors are linearly independent in , so is square with full column rank. Hence and .
Then . So is invertible and . This makes (A) true and (C) false.
The singular values of are the square roots of the eigenvalues of . Because is invertible, is invertible too, so none of its eigenvalues is . Hence is not a singular value of , and (B) is false.
For any non-zero , . Since is invertible, , so . Thus is positive definite and happens only for . So (D) is false.
Only (A) is correct.
KEY IDEA
The matrix with entries is the Gram matrix . When the columns of are linearly independent, is invertible, so is symmetric positive definite and in particular invertible.
WATCH OUT FOR
Treating "Gram matrix" as automatically singular, or mixing up positive semidefinite with positive definite. A Gram matrix is only semidefinite in general. It is singular exactly when the vectors are linearly dependent, and here they are independent.
