GATE 2025 DA Q.22: solution and answer

GATE 2025 · DAQ.22 · 1 mark · MCQ

Consider designing a linear classifier , on a dataset , , , . Recall that the sign function outputs if the argument is positive, and if the argument is non-positive. The parameters and are updated as per the following training algorithm: , whenever . In other words, whenever the classifier wrongly predicts a sample from the dataset, gets updated to , and likewise gets updated to . Consider the case , . Then

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct option is (A): after the perceptron update the score at rises by , so .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 DA (IIT Roorkee)

  1. The sample has and . The sign function then outputs , so the sample is misclassified and the update fires: and .

  2. Evaluate the new score at the same point :

  3. Expand:

  4. Since , the increment . The score therefore strictly increases: . This is option (A).

  5. Options (B) and (C) contradict this strict increase. Option (D) is false, because , which is not greater than .

KEY IDEA

A perceptron update on a mistake always moves the score at that sample toward the correct side. For the score changes by . In general, the change in is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming one update must fix the misclassification, or confusing the increase with . The score increases by , but the new score may still be negative. Another slip is forgetting the bias update, which contributes the extra , or choosing (D), which wrongly asserts a margin condition on the old score.
