Figure description

A four-arm bridge drawn as a diamond with nodes left, top, right and bottom. Arm left-top: a 500 Ω resistor in series with a 1 H inductor. Arm top-right: a 1000 Ω resistor. Arm left-bottom: a 1000 Ω resistor. Arm bottom-right: a capacitor C in series with a resistor R. A detector D is connected between the top and bottom nodes. An AC source 5 sin(5000t) V is connected between the left and right nodes.

  1. (A)

    1.010 Ω and 19.802 μF

  2. (B)

    9.901 Ω and 0.505 μF

  3. (C)

    19.802 Ω and 1.01 μF

  4. (D)

    39.604 Ω and 2.02 μF

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(C) R = 19.802 Ω and C = 1.01 μF

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Identify the arms. The detector D is connected between the top and bottom nodes, and the source between the left and right nodes. So the opposite-arm pairs are (left-top, bottom-right) and (top-right, left-bottom). From , the angular frequency is .

  2. Write the arm impedances: (left-top), (top-right), (left-bottom), and (bottom-right, and in series).

  3. At balance the products of opposite arms are equal: . So .

  4. Rationalise the denominator:

  5. Equate the real parts: .

  6. Equate the imaginary parts: , so .

  7. Check: is inductive (positive angle), so the arm opposite it must be capacitive (negative angle) for to be a real number, . The series RC arm is capacitive, and comes out positive, so the balance can actually be reached. and is option (C).

KEY IDEA

An AC bridge balances when the products of the complex impedances of opposite arms are equal, . The real parts and the imaginary parts must each match. The inductive arm does not balance on its own, so the answer depends on frequency. Take straight from .

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to read 5000 as the frequency in hertz and use . The argument of the sine is , so . Another is to pair adjacent arms instead of opposite ones, for example . That makes inductive, which a series RC arm cannot be.
