GATE 2024 · EEQ.49 · 2 marks · NAT

For the circuit shown in the figure, the source frequency is 5000 rad/sec. The mutual inductance between the magnetically coupled inductors is 5 mH with their self inductances being 125 mH and 1 mH. The Thevenin's impedance, , between the terminals and in is ________ (rounded off to 2 decimal places).

Figure from the GATE 2024 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

An AC voltage source, labelled 'Source', sits on the far left. Its top terminal goes through a series impedance Z_s to terminal P. Its bottom terminal goes to terminal Q. P and Q are open terminals, and an arrow labelled Z_th points to the right from them, into the network. From P a series 4 Ω resistor leads to a node A. A shunt 4 Ω resistor connects node A to the bottom rail, which is the Q line. From node A a series 2 Ω resistor leads to the top of a 125 mH inductor, the primary, whose other end goes to the bottom rail. The primary has its dot at the top. The primary is magnetically coupled, with M = 5 mH shown by arrows at the bottom, to a 1 mH secondary inductor, also dotted at the top. The secondary sits in its own isolated loop in series with a 50 capacitor. The secondary loop has no conductive connection to the rest of the circuit.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(purely resistive).

Official answer: 5.32 to 5.34Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Reactances at : , , , .

  2. Total impedance of the secondary loop ( in series with ): .

  3. Reflected impedance into the primary. KVL round the secondary loop gives , so . Substituting into the primary equation gives . So . The dot positions do not matter here, because appears squared.

  4. Input impedance of the coupled branch: . The transformer branch therefore behaves as a short circuit.

  5. To find , look to the right of P–Q, as the arrow shows. The source and lie on the other side of the terminals, so they play no part. The resistor in series with the branch gives . That is in parallel with the shunt : .

  6. Add the series :

KEY IDEA

The secondary loop is nearly resonant (), so the impedance it reflects into the primary, , exactly cancels . The whole coupled branch is then a short circuit, and reduces to a resistor ladder, . Thevenin impedance is measured looking into the network the arrow points at, so the source and are left out.

WATCH OUT FOR

(1) Getting the sign of wrong, so is written as instead of . That doubles the primary reactance instead of cancelling it. (2) Leaving the capacitor out of (using ), which gives and a complex . (3) Adding or the source to , although the arrow points away from them. (4) Thinking the answer depends on the dot convention: the reflected impedance depends on , so the dots do not change it.
