GATE 2020 EC question 52: Plot of x(t) against t (t-axis marked -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4;Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Plot of x(t) against t (t-axis marked -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4; vertical axis marked 1, 2, 3). x(t) is piecewise linear: zero for t < -1; rises linearly from (-1, 0) to (0, 1); rises more steeply from (0, 1) to the peak (1, 3); falls from (1, 3) to (2, 1); falls from (2, 1) to (3, 0); zero for t > 3. Dashed guide lines: a horizontal one from the vertical axis at level 3 to the peak, a horizontal one at level 1 from the vertical axis to t = 2, and vertical ones at t = 1 (up to the peak) and t = 2 (up to level 1).

  1. Parseval's theorem (with in rad/s): . So we only need the energy of ; never has to be found.

  2. Read the segments off the graph (corners at , , , , ): on , on , on , on , and zero elsewhere. The signal is symmetric about (for example for ), so the energy of the right half equals the energy of the left half.

  3. Outer ramp, : .

  4. Inner ramp, : .

  5. By symmetry, gives and gives . Total:

  6. Apply Parseval's theorem:

KEY IDEA

Parseval's theorem turns an integral over frequency into an energy integral over time: when is in rad/s. For a piecewise-linear signal, split it at its corners, square each linear piece and integrate. Use symmetry to halve the work.

WATCH OUT FOR

Leaving out the factor gives . That factor belongs to the (rad/s) form of Parseval's theorem; only the (Hz) form has no . Two other slips are common: squaring the triangle's area instead of integrating , and misreading the change of slope at and , which treats the signal as a single triangle from to with peak 3 and gives .
