Answer and solution

ANSWER

is band-limited between 200 Hz and 400 Hz: option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Write the operation as a compression followed by a delay: . Let , so .

  2. Time-scaling property: if , then . With : .

  3. Time-shift property: a delay only multiplies the spectrum by a phase factor, . Since , the delay does not change where the spectrum is zero or non-zero.

  4. Band-limited between 100 Hz and 200 Hz means unless . So can be non-zero only where , i.e. .

  5. Compressing in time by a factor of 2 stretches the spectrum by a factor of 2, so both band edges double and is band-limited between 200 Hz and 400 Hz. This is option (C). (B) would hold only for a pure delay, (A) is what an expansion would give, and (D) is wrong because scaling and shifting never create frequencies outside the stretched band.

KEY IDEA

Time scaling and the frequency axis move in opposite directions: , so compressing by 2 doubles every band edge. A time shift only multiplies the spectrum by , whose magnitude is 1, so it never changes the band.

WATCH OUT FOR

Reading as halving the frequencies and choosing (A), 50 to 100 Hz. at is , so the band moves UP to 200 to 400 Hz. The other trap is thinking the shift by 5 changes the spectrum's support, or choosing (B) because the shift is mistaken for the only operation.
