Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two sketches side by side. Left: x(t) versus t. It is an inverted triangle lying entirely below the axis: it is 0 at t = -1, falls linearly to a minimum of -1, then rises linearly back to 0 at t = 0, and is zero outside [-1, 0]. The minimum sits exactly halfway between -1 and 0, marked by a vertical dashed line down from a tick labelled '0.5' (printed without a minus sign, though its position is t = -0.5) and a horizontal dashed line across to the level labelled -1 on the vertical axis. The origin is labelled 0. Right: y(t) versus t. It is an upright triangle: 0 at t = -2, rising linearly to a peak of 1 at t = 0, falling linearly to 0 at t = 2, and zero outside [-2, 2]. The ticks are labelled -2, 0, 2 on the t-axis and 1 on the vertical axis.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

  1. Read the two figures. is zero outside and forms a triangle of height with base 1. The tick under its minimum is printed as '0.5', but the tick sits halfway between and , so the minimum is at . That is the only reading that fits a triangle on . is a triangle of height with base 4, running from to and centred at . So is with its sign flipped, stretched 4 times in time, and moved so that its centre sits at the origin.

  2. Try . The argument is a linear function of , so it sends straight segments to straight segments and corners to corners. The two sides are therefore equal if they agree at the three corners and are both zero outside. At : . At : . At : . For the argument falls outside , so the right side is zero, just like . The relation holds.

  3. Rewrite the argument as . Then with .

  4. Time-scaling property: . With , .

  5. Time-shift property: . With and the minus sign carried along:

  6. Check by doing the operations in the other order. First shift: . Then replace by . Every becomes and the whole transform is multiplied by 4, giving . With the minus sign this is the same result as before.

  7. Check with closed forms. Let for and otherwise, so that with . Then , so . Substituting: Computed directly, . The two agree. Option (A) would instead give , which is not real, but is real and even, so its transform must be real. The answer is (B).

KEY IDEA

Write as a sign flip, a time scaling and a time shift of . Then apply the scaling and shift properties in the same order you built the argument. A 4-times stretch in time compresses the spectrum () and multiplies it by 4. Shifting the stretched signal by 2 multiplies the transform by . As a quick check, is real and even, so must be real. Only option (B) gives that.

WATCH OUT FOR

The most common slip is to apply the shift of after the scaling and so write (option A). Once has been stretched by 4, the shift that lands its centre at the origin is 2, not . If you shift first, the scaling turns into . The second slip is to mix up stretching and compression and write (options C and D). A signal that is wider in time has a narrower spectrum, which is with a factor of 4 in front.
