GATE 2023 EC question 58: Plot of x_2(t) against t, with ticks marked at -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Plot of x_2(t) against t, with ticks marked at -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2. It has three parts: (1) an impulse (upward arrow) at t=-3 labelled 1, i.e. δ (t+3); (2) a rectangular pulse of height 1 from t=-1 to t=1; (3) an impulse (upward arrow) at t=2 labelled 2, i.e. 2 δ (t-2). Everywhere else x_2(t)=0.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 15Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Area property of convolution: for , This is in the Fourier domain, since .

  2. is a unit-height pulse on , so its area is .

  3. Read from the figure: .

  4. Area of : the impulse at contributes its strength , the pulse contributes , and the impulse at contributes its strength . Total .

  5. So

KEY IDEA

The area under a convolution equals the product of the areas of the two signals, because . You never need to work out itself. An impulse adds its strength (the number printed on the arrow) to the area.

WATCH OUT FOR

Doing the convolution by hand, and slipping on the overlapping pieces as the pulse slides past the impulses. Also: counting the impulses as zero area because they have zero width, reading the impulse at as strength 1 instead of 2, or taking the width of as 1.5 instead of 3.
