GATE 2025 · INQ.39 · 2 marks · MCQ

Let , where and real, represent a difference equation of a causal discrete-time linear time invariant system. The system is initially at rest. If where , the value of is

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, which is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Initial rest + causality: the input is zero for every , and the system starts at rest, so for all . In particular .

  2. Iterate the recursion at : .

  3. Iterate at : .

  4. Check with the impulse response: with the same recursion gives . Equivalently, , and causality fixes the ROC as .

  5. Time invariance: a shifted input gives a shifted output, so . Therefore

  6. The value of does not matter. Because the system is time invariant, is always , so the condition changes nothing. The condition only makes the system stable (pole at , inside the unit circle) and does not affect either. The answer is option (C).

KEY IDEA

For an LTI system at initial rest, the response to is the impulse response delayed by . So , and one step of the recursion gives , .

WATCH OUT FOR

Reading the answer at the wrong index. (option B) is the value at the instant the impulse arrives, but the question asks for one sample later, . Going two samples later gives (option D), and forgetting that the output only starts at gives 0 (option A). A second trap is thinking that or changes the value. Neither does.
