The continuous-time unit impulse signal is applied as an input to a continuous-time linear time-invariant system . The output is observed to be the continuous-time unit step signal . Which one of the following statements is true?

  1. (A)

Every bounded input signal applied to results in a bounded output signal.

  2. (B)

It is possible to find a bounded input signal which when applied to results in an unbounded output signal.

  3. (C)

On applying any input signal to , the output signal is always bounded.

  4. (D)

On applying any input signal to the output signal is always unbounded.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B): because the impulse response is , which is not absolutely integrable, is not BIBO stable. The bounded input produces the unbounded ramp .

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Impulse response. The response of an LTI system to is, by definition, its impulse response, so . Convolution then gives so is an ideal integrator.

  2. BIBO stability test (CT LTI). A continuous-time LTI system is BIBO stable if and only if is absolutely integrable. Here The integral diverges, so is not BIBO stable. This rules out (A).

  3. A bounded input that gives an unbounded output (supports B). Take , which is bounded (). Then This ramp grows without limit as , so (B) is true. The same example rules out (C), because here the output is not bounded.

  4. Rule out (D). The input gives , which is bounded. The zero input also gives zero output. So the output is not always unbounded.

  5. Only (B) is true.

KEY IDEA

A continuous-time LTI system is BIBO stable if and only if . An impulse response of makes the system an ideal integrator. Its integral diverges, so the system is unstable, and a bounded step input produces an unbounded ramp.

WATCH OUT FOR

Calling the system stable because its impulse response is bounded (this leads to A). Stability needs to be absolutely integrable, and being bounded is not enough. A second mistake is to pick (D) by reading 'unstable' as 'every output is unbounded'. Instability only means that at least one bounded input gives an unbounded output. Many inputs, such as or a finite pulse, still give bounded outputs.
