Figure from the GATE 2018 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single series loop. Left branch, from bottom to top: a dc battery labelled V (bottom plate connected to the bottom wire), and above it an ac sinusoidal source labelled 5 sin(ωt) mV. The top of the ac source connects by the top wire to the anode of a diode. The diode points to the right, so its anode is on the left and its cathode on the right. The cathode connects down the right branch through a 100 Ω resistor to the bottom wire. The bottom wire is connected to ground. The battery V is poled so that the diode is forward biased and carries the stated 26 µA dc current.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The amplitude of the small-signal diode current is about 6.4 µA.

Official answer: 6.2 to 6.6Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Small-signal model of the diode. At the Q-point the forward-biased diode is modelled as its incremental (dynamic) resistance in parallel with the junction capacitance given in the question. The neutral-region (series) resistance is neglected, as stated. For the ac analysis the dc battery is replaced by a short circuit, which leaves the source in series with the diode model and the resistor.

  2. Incremental resistance with ideality factor and :

  3. Capacitive reactance at :

  4. Diode impedance, with in parallel with :

  5. Total loop impedance, adding the series :

  6. Phasor amplitude of the current. It is a single series loop, so the whole ac current flows through the diode (as the sum of its and branch currents): Check on the small-signal assumption: the ac voltage across the diode is , well below , so the linear model is reasonable.

  7. Correct to one decimal place, the amplitude of the small-signal diode current is .

KEY IDEA

For small signals, a forward-biased diode acts as its dynamic resistance in parallel with its junction capacitance. With the dc source shorted, the ac current is the source amplitude divided by the magnitude of the complex loop impedance, which is in series with the resistor.

WATCH OUT FOR

Students often ignore and take . Another mistake is to add and in series, or to add the magnitudes instead of adding the complex impedances first. Some also report only the current through and leave out the current through the capacitance, although the question asks for the total diode current.
