Answer and solution

ANSWER

Options A, B and C are correct. Option D is not.

Official answer: A, B, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 DA (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Entailment means every model that makes true also makes true. So no model has true and false.

  2. (A) is equivalent to . It is false only when is true and is false, and entailment rules that case out. So the implication is true in every model. Correct.

  3. (B) is true exactly when is true and is false. Entailment says this never happens, so is FALSE in every model. Correct. This is the same condition as (A), since .

  4. (C) 'If then ' is the plain-English reading of , so it is correct for the same reason as (A).

  5. (D) 'If then ' is the converse, . Entailment is not symmetric. Take and . Then entails . But with true and false, is true and is false, so fails. So (D) does not follow. Not correct.

  6. Hence A, B and C are correct.

KEY IDEA

entails exactly when is true in every model. That is the same as saying is never true. Options A, B and C are three ways of writing this one condition.

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating 'if then ' as also following. That is the converse, and entailment goes in one direction only.
