GATE 2026 · BTQ.65 · 2 marks · NAT

A packed bed bioreactor with length 1 m and inside diameter 10 cm has liquid flowing at an interstitial velocity of 1 cm s. Given a volumetric flow rate of 0.025 L s, the void fraction of the packed bed is ______. (rounded off to two decimal places)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The void fraction of the packed bed is .

Official answer: 0.31 to 0.32Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 BT (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Symbols: = volumetric flow rate, = inside diameter of the column, = cross-sectional area of the empty column, = superficial velocity, = interstitial velocity, = void fraction of the bed.

  2. Put everything in consistent units: , , .

  3. Cross-sectional area of the empty column: .

  4. Superficial velocity (the flow rate spread over the whole cross-section, as if the column were empty): .

  5. Dupuit relation: the liquid can pass only through the voids, which occupy a fraction of the cross-section, so , which gives .

  6. The bed length (1 m) is not needed for the void fraction. It would matter only for the bed volume or the liquid residence time in the voids, .

KEY IDEA

Superficial velocity is the flow rate divided by the area of the empty column, . The liquid actually moves only through the voids, so the interstitial velocity is higher: . The void fraction is therefore the ratio .

WATCH OUT FOR

Writing (about 3.14, which cannot be right because a void fraction must be below 1), or dividing by without first converting litres to cm (1 L = 1000 cm). Some candidates also get distracted by the 1 m bed length and try to use a bed volume, but the length plays no part in the void fraction.
