Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (A): the ash-free cell formula normalised to one N atom is C5.83 H11.2 O1.75 N, printed as C5.8H11.2O1.7N.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 BT (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Removing the ash leaves of organic matter per of biomass (and indeed ). On an ash-free basis the percentages become , , , . Every element is divided by the same factor , so the ratios between them do not change, and we can work directly with the given masses.

  2. Moles of each element in of the sample (mass atomic mass, with , , , ): , , , .

  3. Normalise to one N atom by dividing each by the moles of N:

  4. The empirical formula of the ash-free cells is . Written to one decimal place, as the options are, this is . (The printed option cuts O off at rather than rounding up to ; no option shows , so this does not change the match.)

  5. Checking the others: B, C and D each have a C:N ratio (, , ) and an O:N ratio (, , ) that differ from and , so only option (A) is consistent with the data.

KEY IDEA

Ash is inorganic and is left out of the formula. Taking it out scales every element's percentage by the same factor (1/0.88), so the atom ratios stay the same. Convert each mass to moles (divide by atomic mass), then divide every mole count by the moles of N: C/N = (50/12)/(10/14) = 5.83, H/N = 8/(10/14) = 11.2, O/N = (20/16)/(10/14) = 1.75.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using mass ratios instead of mole ratios. The mass ratio C:N = 50/10 = 5.0, which is exactly the trap in option (B). You must divide by atomic masses first. Two other mistakes: thinking the 12% ash changes the atom ratios (it only rescales every element by the same factor), and ruling out (A) because 1.75 would round to 1.8. The option truncates to 1.7, and no other option comes close on C, H or O.
