ANSWER
The simplified expression is , which is option (B).
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)
Here a bar () means complement. With as the MSB and as the LSB, the minterms in order are , , , and , where . The minterm is a don't care (X). That leaves only for and .
Draw the 3-variable K-map with rows and columns in Gray order. Row : , , , . Row : , , , .
Take the don't care as 1. The whole row () is then a quad. Only is constant across it (it is 0), so the quad gives .
The two middle columns and () form a second quad. in every one of these cells while and both change, so this quad gives .
The two quads together cover every 1 (), and neither includes a 0 ( or ). Each quad is the largest group possible, and one quad alone cannot cover all the 1s. So the minimal SOP is Check: only when and , which is exactly and .
Checking the other options: (A) covers (from ), (from ) and (from ), but it misses . (C) equals 1 at and , where . (D) contains , which is 1 at and , and it also misses , and . Only (B) matches.
KEY IDEA
Set the don't care to 1 where it makes a group bigger. Here it completes two quads: the row gives , and the columns with give . Before accepting the answer, check that is 0 exactly at and .
WATCH OUT FOR
Leaving the don't care as 0. The 1s then break into smaller groups, such as or something close to option (A), and it looks as if no option simplifies far enough. Another slip is to use B's weight for A and get the minterm numbers wrong, which puts the 0s in the wrong cells and makes (C) look right.
