GATE 2025 · ECQ.35 · 1 mark · NAT

A 4-bit weighted-resistor DAC with inputs , , , and (MSB to LSB) is designed using an ideal opamp, as shown below. The switches are closed when the corresponding input bits are logic '1' and open otherwise.

When the input changes from 1110 to 1101, the magnitude of the change in the output voltage (in mV, rounded off to the nearest integer) is ________.

Figure from the GATE 2025 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A reference source V_REF = 2 V drives a common top rail. Four resistors hang from this rail in parallel, from left to right: R, 2R, 4R, 8R. Each resistor's lower end goes through a single-pole switch labelled, left to right, b_3, b_2, b_1, b_0 (so b_3 is in series with R, b_2 with 2R, b_1 with 4R, b_0 with 8R). The far sides of all four switches join a common bottom node, which connects to the inverting (−) input of an ideal op-amp. A feedback resistor R runs from the op-amp output back to the inverting input. The non-inverting (+) input is grounded. The output is labelled V_O.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The output changes from to , so the magnitude of the change in is .

Official answer: 250Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. The op-amp is ideal and its + input is grounded, so the − input is a virtual ground (). A closed switch on bit carries into that node. An open switch carries no current.

  2. Total current into the summing node:

  3. No current enters an ideal op-amp input, so all of flows through the feedback resistor . This is an inverting summing amplifier:

  4. For : .

  5. For : .

  6. Magnitude of the change: .

  7. Check using the step size. One LSB is . The input code drops from to , which is exactly one LSB, so .

KEY IDEA

In a weighted-resistor DAC with a virtual-ground summing node, . The output is proportional to the binary value of the input code, so any change in output equals (change in code) (one LSB step). Here one LSB is , and is a change of one step.

WATCH OUT FOR

Two bits flip (: , : ), and a common error is to add the two contributions as magnitudes () when they have opposite signs and partly cancel, leaving a net . Two other slips: pairing the LSB with the smallest resistor instead of , which reverses the bit weights, and taking the step as as if this were an R-2R ladder with full-scale . In this circuit the feedback resistor equals the MSB resistor, so the MSB alone gives and the LSB step is .
