GATE 2018 · EEQ.52 · 2 marks · NAT

A 200 V DC series motor, when operating from rated voltage while driving a certain load, draws 10 A current and runs at 1000 r.p.m. The total series resistance is 1 Ω. The magnetic circuit is assumed to be linear. At the same supply voltage, the load torque is increased by 44%. The speed of the motor in r.p.m. (rounded to the nearest integer) is ________.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The speed of the motor after the load torque increases by 44% is approximately 825 r.p.m.

  1. Given: rated voltage , armature current , speed , total series resistance . The magnetic circuit is linear, so flux .

  2. Since for a series motor with linear magnetics, a 44% increase in load torque requires , giving .

  3. Back-EMF at state 1: .

  4. Back-EMF at state 2: .

  5. Since , the back-EMF , so .

  6. Substituting values:

  7. Rounded to the nearest integer,

KEY IDEA

In a linearly-saturated (unsaturated, linear) DC series motor, flux is proportional to armature current, so torque is proportional to the square of armature current. Equating motor torque to the new load torque gives the new armature current directly; back-EMF at each operating point then follows from V − IaR, and since Eb ∝ φN ∝ IaN, the ratio of back-EMFs gives the new speed.

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming speed is inversely proportional to current alone (as in a shunt motor with constant flux) instead of properly forming the ratio Eb1/Eb2 = (N1 Ia1)/(N2 Ia2), which correctly accounts for flux also changing with armature current in a series motor.
