  1. (A)

    0.46

  2. (B)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The current through the wire is , which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Ohm's law in point form: the conduction current density is . It points along the wire, in the same direction as .

  2. Cross-section: the diameter is , so the radius is and

  3. The field is steady (DC), so there is no skin effect and is uniform over the cross-section. The current is therefore .

  4. This is option (A).

KEY IDEA

Use Ohm's law in point form, . With a steady field the current density is uniform across the wire, so the current is just times the cross-sectional area: .

WATCH OUT FOR

Putting the diameter in place of the radius gives and a current four times too large, , which is option (B). Forgetting the factor gives , and taking the area as gives , which is option (C). Make sure mm is converted to m before you square it.
