GATE 2018 · EEQ.10 · 1 mark · MCQ

A positive charge of 1 nC is placed at (0, 0, 0.2) where all dimensions are in metres. Consider the - plane to be a conducting ground plane. Take F/m. The component of the E field at (0, 0, 0.1) is closest to

  1. (A)

    899.18 V/m

  2. (B)

    −899.18 V/m

  3. (C)

    999.09 V/m

  4. (D)

    −999.09 V/m

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The z component of the electric field at (0, 0, 0.1) is about −999.09 V/m, which is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Method of images: replace the grounded plane with an image charge at . The pair keeps everywhere on the plane, so the field in the region is unchanged. The field point lies in that region.

  2. Coulomb constant, with :

  3. Real charge at : the field point is below it. The field of a positive charge points away from the charge, so here it points in :

  4. Image charge at : the field point is above it. The field of a negative charge points toward the charge, so this one also points in :

  5. Superposition: which is option (D).

KEY IDEA

A point charge above a grounded conducting plane gives the same field (above the plane) as the charge plus an equal and opposite image charge placed at its mirror point. At a point between the real charge and the plane, both the real charge (pushing away) and the negative image (pulling toward) give a field along −z, so the two magnitudes add.

WATCH OUT FOR

Leaving out the image charge gives −899.18 V/m (option B). Getting the direction wrong gives a positive value (option A or C). Another mistake is to subtract the image contribution instead of adding it. Directly below a positive charge, and above a negative image, both fields point along −z.
