GATE 2023 · INQ.45 · 2 marks · NAT

A silica-glass fiber has a core refractive index of 1.47 and a cladding refractive index of 1.44. If the cladding is completely stripped out and the core is dipped in water having a refractive index of 1.33, the numerical aperture of the modified fiber is ________ (rounded off to three decimal places).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The numerical aperture of the modified fiber is .

Official answer: 0.620 to 0.640Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Identify the new cladding. Once the glass cladding is removed and the core is dipped in water, the water surrounds the core and does the cladding's job. So (core) and (water). The original cladding index no longer plays any part.

  2. Numerical aperture of a step-index guide. Light is launched from air, so :

  3. Substitute:

  4. This is less than , so it is a valid acceptance-angle result: .

  5. Sanity check: the original fiber had . Water has a much lower index than the glass cladding, so the core-to-surround index contrast is larger and the NA should rise. It does: .

KEY IDEA

The NA is set by whatever medium directly surrounds the core. Remove the glass cladding and put the core in water, and the water becomes the cladding: with .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the original cladding index 1.44, which gives about 0.295. Another slip is taking the square root of the index difference, , when the formula needs the difference of the squares. Some students also divide by as if light were launched from water. The NA is defined for launch from air (); water here only forms the cladding.
