Answer and solution

ANSWER

is continuous and differentiable at , with . Option D.

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Write the function piecewise:

  2. Continuity at : , and . The left limit, the right limit and the value agree, so is continuous at .

  3. Differentiability, from the definition of the derivative. For , , so

  4. The one-sided derivatives agree: the right-hand derivative is and the left-hand derivative is . So exists and equals .

  5. Cross-check: for , for and , which is for every . This derivative is continuous but has a corner at , so is differentiable once at but not twice.

  6. Eliminate the options. A and B both claim is discontinuous at , which step 2 disproves (B is impossible anyway, since a function differentiable at a point is continuous there). C claims is not differentiable at , which steps 3 and 4 disprove. Option D is correct.

KEY IDEA

Split by sign to get for and for . At , both the one-sided limits and the one-sided difference quotients go to , so is continuous and differentiable there, with . Multiplying by smooths out the corner of once: still has a corner, so does not exist.

WATCH OUT FOR

Seeing and picking C by reflex, because itself is not differentiable at . The extra factor makes the difference quotient , which tends to from both sides. A second slip is to confuse "differentiable once" with "differentiable twice": does not exist, but the question asks only about the first derivative.
