Figure from the GATE 2022 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Complex plane with horizontal axis labelled Re(z) and vertical axis labelled Im(z). Tick marks on the real axis are labelled (-1,0), (0,0) at the origin, and (1,0). A closed curve C, shaped like a rounded teardrop, has its pointed left end on the real axis at about Re(z) = -1.7, so the point (-1,0) lies inside C. It rises through the second quadrant, crosses the positive imaginary axis, comes down on the right side, and crosses the positive real axis at about Re(z) = 0.6, between the origin and (1,0), so the point (1,0) lies outside C. The curve then goes through the third and fourth quadrants and back to its left end. Arrowheads show the direction: the arrow on the top arc points left, and the arrow on the lower-right arc (labelled C) points upward, so C is traversed counterclockwise (the positive direction).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 0.50Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Singularities. , so the integrand has simple poles at and . The numerator is entire and not zero at either point, so there are no other singularities.

  2. Read the figure. meets the real axis at about on the left and on the right. The right crossing is between the origin and the tick at . So is inside and is outside. The arrows point left on the top arc and up on the lower-right arc, so is traversed counterclockwise (the positive sense).

  3. Residue at the enclosed pole. For a simple pole, :

  4. Cauchy's residue theorem. The contour is counterclockwise and encloses only :

  5. Match with the given form. , so .

KEY IDEA

Only the poles inside the contour count. The figure puts inside and outside, so the integral is times the single residue . That gives , so .

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting both poles. The residue at is , and adding it gives , so . But the contour crosses the real axis at about , to the left of , so is outside. Two other slips give : reading the orientation as clockwise, or dropping the sign of at .
