Answer and solution

ANSWER

The answer is (D), . Every row of sums to zero, so . That makes it an eigenvector with eigenvalue .

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. Definition: a nonzero vector is an eigenvector of if for some scalar . Multiply into each option and check whether the result is a scalar multiple of that option.

  2. Quick observation: every row of sums to zero (, , ). Multiplying by adds up each row, so . Option (D) is an eigenvector with .

  3. Cross-check with the determinant: . So is an eigenvalue, as expected.

  4. Rule out (A): . The first entry needs , so . The second needs , so . No single works, so (A) is not an eigenvector.

  5. Rule out (B): . The first entry forces , so . But then the second entry would have to be , not . So (B) is not an eigenvector.

  6. Rule out (C): . The first entry needs , so . The second needs , so . That is a contradiction. (This fits, because (C) is just times (A).)

  7. Only satisfies (with ). The answer is (D).

KEY IDEA

Test each option directly against : one value of has to work in every entry. A useful shortcut: if every row of a matrix has the same sum , then is an eigenvector with eigenvalue . Here .

WATCH OUT FOR

Stopping once one entry of matches a multiple of . For option (A) the first and third entries of fit , but the middle entry does not. Every entry has to give the same . A second slip is to reject (D) because . The zero vector is not allowed as an eigenvector, but is a perfectly valid eigenvalue, and it occurs exactly when is singular.
