ANSWER
(A) 0, 0, 0. If , every eigenvalue satisfies , so all three eigenvalues of are zero.
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)
Let be any eigenvalue of , with eigenvector (real or complex), so .
Apply again: . In general, if is an eigenvalue of , then is an eigenvalue of .
Since , the left side is , so . Because , this forces , so .
This holds for every eigenvalue, real or complex. The characteristic polynomial of the matrix has degree 3, so it has three roots counted with multiplicity, and each of them is . The eigenvalues are therefore . (Equivalently: annihilates , so the minimal polynomial divides , and its only possible root is .)
Check with an example: satisfies . The matrix is upper triangular, so , and the eigenvalues are .
An eigenvalue of would mean is an eigenvalue of , which is impossible because the zero matrix has only the eigenvalue . This rules out options (B), (C) and (D). The answer is (A).
KEY IDEA
If , then . So a matrix with (a nilpotent matrix) can only have the eigenvalue , repeated times for an matrix, whatever the size of .
WATCH OUT FOR
One mistake is to think forces and then stop. Another is to allow eigenvalues of because is not the zero matrix. need not be zero (for example, a single above the diagonal), but every eigenvalue still satisfies . A nonzero nilpotent matrix still has only the eigenvalue .
