The matrix has eigenvalues and . The eigenvector(s) is/are ________
ANSWER
(A) and (C). is an eigenvector for , and is an eigenvector for .
Official answer: A, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)
Check the given eigenvalues against the trace and the determinant: and . Both agree.
For , solve : . Every eigenvector for is a nonzero multiple of , which is option (A).
For , solve : . Every eigenvector for is a nonzero multiple of . Since , option (C) is one of them.
Check (A) and (C) directly: and .
Rule out (B) and (D): and . Neither result is a scalar multiple of the vector it came from, so neither is an eigenvector. (Equivalently, neither satisfies or .)
The correct options are (A), for , and (C), for .
KEY IDEA
A nonzero vector is an eigenvector of exactly when is a scalar multiple of . For a matrix with known eigenvalues, one row of gives the direction for each eigenvalue: here for and for . Any nonzero scalar multiple of an eigenvector is also an eigenvector, so counts even though it is not the simplest form .
WATCH OUT FOR
Rejecting (C) because it is not written in its simplest form . Scaling an eigenvector by a nonzero number gives another eigenvector. The other common slip is a sign error in , which gives instead of and can steer you towards a vector like (B).
