A matrix has its elements as

ANSWER
The rank of is , which is option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)
Write the entry rule as one formula. is when is even and when it is odd, so . Check: for even this gives , for odd it gives , as printed.
Read that as an outer product. Let with for . Then , that is, .
Check the first rows. Row 1 is and row 2 is , so . In general , so .
Row-reduce with for . Every row below the first becomes zero.
One non-zero row is left, and it is non-zero because . So for every and every non-zero . This is option (A).
KEY IDEA
Each entry factors as , so with . A non-zero matrix that is a scalar times an outer product has rank exactly 1: every row is a multiple () of the first row.
WATCH OUT FOR
Treating the checkerboard of and as two independent row types (odd rows and even rows) and answering 2. An even row is exactly times an odd row, so the two types are dependent. The other trap is thinking the size or the condition affects the answer. Neither does: the rank is 1 for any size and any non-zero .
