Answer and solution

ANSWER

, which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Characteristic polynomial. is block-diagonal. Its upper block has trace and determinant , so that block contributes . The block contributes . So , and the only eigenvalue is (repeated three times).

  2. By the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, . That is a cubic, so check whether a lower power already vanishes.

  3. . Squaring it: the third row and third column are zero, so only the top-left entries need checking. : . : . : . : . So . Since , the minimal polynomial is .

  4. Expand, remembering that and commute: .

  5. Direct check: and The two agree.

  6. Rule out the other options: (the entry of is , not ); (its off-diagonal entries and are nonzero); and has entry , while has there. So the answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

Every eigenvalue of is , and , so the minimal polynomial is . Expanding gives directly. For a matrix like this one, simply multiplying by itself and comparing with each option is just as quick, and it is a good check on the theory.

WATCH OUT FOR

Going only as far as Cayley-Hamilton, which gives the cubic , and then trying to force a quadratic answer out of it without first checking that is already zero. The other slip is multiplying carelessly: a single sign error in the or entry of (true values and ) makes or look like a match.
