ANSWER
The line integral is , option (B).
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)
Write the integrand as with and test whether the field is conservative. The curl components are , and . So everywhere in : the field is conservative and the integral does not depend on the path.
Find the potential. and , so . Check: .
By the fundamental theorem for line integrals, . Here and .
So the integral is .
Check along the given straight line: for , so , , . Then which agrees.
The value is , which is option (B).
KEY IDEA
, so is the gradient of . The integral therefore depends only on its endpoints: . Saying the path is a straight line only reassures you. It does not change the answer.
WATCH OUT FOR
Stopping at and forgetting to subtract picks the distractor (C). A sign error with when parametrising also goes wrong: falls from 2 to 1 along the line, so the term has to be negative. Another mistake is adding twice when building the potential, once from and once from . It is a single term.
