- (A)
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
Let, . The direction in which the function increases most rapidly at point is
ANSWER
The function increases most rapidly along , which is option (B).
Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)
A scalar field increases fastest in the direction of its gradient, , evaluated at the point. The directional derivative along a unit vector is , and this is largest when , that is, when points along .
Partial derivative with respect to : . At : .
Partial derivative with respect to : . At : .
Partial derivative with respect to : . At : .
So which is option (B). The unit vector in this direction is , and the maximum rate of increase is . Options (A), (C) and (D) each leave out a component that is not zero at , so none of them is parallel to .
KEY IDEA
The direction of fastest increase of a scalar field is the direction of its gradient at the point, and the maximum rate of increase is the gradient's magnitude. Here and the maximum rate is .
WATCH OUT FOR
The usual slip is to drop a component because a coordinate of is zero. does not contain , so it equals 7 at even though there. That slip gives option (C). Another slip is differentiating with respect to as instead of , or forgetting the term in , which gives 8 instead of 20.
